Summary

Chapter 41 continues in Kaladin's first person narration but this chapter is a flashback from five and a half years ago. Kaladin enters his father's surgery, pushing past Laral who is screaming at Lirin and Kaladin to help Rillir and Roshone. Kaladin stares at the amount of blood before his father's words make him spring into action Rilliar and Roshone have been attacked by a whitespine they were hunting and Rillir suffered a gut wound. After examining it, Lirin knows there is nothing he can do so he turns to look at Roshone's injuries. Roshone is upset but Kaladin is able to put him into a stupor with a special smelling oil. Kaladin also gives some of the smelling oil to Rillir to ease his pain as he dies. While Lirin is tending to Roshone's leg, he has a chance to cut the man's...
