Infidelity

Although it is hard to say that this novel really has any clearly defined themes, the act of infidelity comes up again and again in the course of the story. Tiffany cheated on Stephen, Stephen cheated on Tiffany, Tiffany cheated on Stephen and got pregnant, Stephen cheated on Tiffany with Tiffany’s sister. The novel could compete with a soap opera for the number of and circumstances of affairs that take place within the story. There are a few interesting things to notice about the reactions the characters have to all the cheating going on.

Tiffany was the first one to have an affair. She had an affair with Elvis, a man who worked at a nearby gas station. Tiffany told Stephen about her affair, even had him serve as a chaperone for a date when Elvis wanted to go dancing. At one point in the...
