Naples, Florida

The entire novel takes place in various locations within Naples, Florida, a fairly affluent city in southern Florida where Aly and Bindu live. Despite the fact that they have called this city home for quite some time, there are absolutely ugly things about it that make the two women uncomfortable. Bindu is met with the racial biases that many of the people in the city hold when she goes to the open house for Shady Palms at the beginning of the novel. She finds herself ignored completely compared to her white friend, Debbie. Meanwhile, Aly finds herself struggling to gain a more prominent role as an on-screen reporter at the news station she works at, mainly because her boss, Joyce, fears that the viewership is not ready to see an Indian woman on screen with that much frequency.
