Chapters 39-42 Summary

Chapter 39 begins with the setup of Operation Kettledrum, which is designed to track Anna through the use of her affair with Jordan. The watchers consistently lose Anna, and Vicary realizes she is a very gifted spy. Jordan arranges to meet her and the listeners know she has photographed the misinformation placed in Jordan's briefcase. Dalton asks Grace for a search on some names provided by Vicary, and Grace tells Boothby about the request.

In Chapter 40, Boothby takes Vicary to meet some of his operatives, Pelican and Hawke. Vicary sees another side of Boothby this night, and learns that Pelican is a double agent working also for Schellenberg of the Abwehr.

In Chapter 41, Anna is traveling to meet her new contact, who is Horst Neumann. Anna is sure she is being followed, but does not catch anyone doing it. Vicary learns Anna...
