Summary

In Chapter 24, set in 1973, Renzo told Joanna he could see that she was not guilty and that he would have his father see to it that she was released. Joanna had to remind herself that it was still possible that Renzo had a hand in Gianni’s murder. She was more determined that something had happened when her father had been in San Salvatore and that somebody wanted what had happened covered up.

Paola told Joanna that she had heard tales of young women raped by the Germans and Germans killing entire villages of people because they had helped the partisans. She explained that the partisans were men who worked against the Germans occupying their land. Paola said that someone betrayed the group of partisans in the San Salvatore area and they were all killed with the exception of Cosimo.
