Summary

In Chapter 9, four men from the bar jumped Nick Andros as he was leaving town. They stopped beating him only when they saw the lights of a car. Nick woke in a jail cell. He got a pad of paper from the Sheriff, John Baker, to tell the sheriff that he was deaf and mute. After the sheriff learned Nick had been doing jobs for people around town, he let him out of his cell and offered him breakfast. Nick described what the men who beat and robbed him looked like. He told the sheriff he wanted to try to find them. Meanwhile, the sheriff was sneezing and had swelling developing under his throat.
