Summary

Story 6 is titled "Birdsong from the Radio." Lenora reflects on telling three children --Rosa, Marco, and Dolly -- that she used to be “ordinary” (107) and how she would tease them about eating them like bread. The other mothers in the neighborhood do not think Lenora properly takes care of the children. Lenora’s family has a long history of sadness, including relatives in asylums and a suicidal aunt. The sadness continues with Lenora’s mental health and losing her children.

Alan hires Madeline, a nanny, to help Lenora care for the children. While driving the children, Madeline hits black ice, and the accident kills Madeline and the three children.
