Summary

In Chapter 4, the next time Trey visits, Cal and Trey work on the desk in silence for a while before Trey asks Cal if he is a cop. Cal considers trying to find out how Trey learned that, but then he decides to be honest. He tells Trey he retired because he had gotten tired of how angry everyone had gotten. Trey becomes interested when Cal says that he had helped track down fugitives as part of his job.

Trey shrugs when Cal asks him why he is not in school. When Cal comments that he guesses it is not his problem Trey smiles for the first time. He tells Cal that cops are not supposed to say things like that. He asks Cal if he can keep coming and helping him with the desk.
