Summary

In Chapter 1, “Sanctuary,” Maisie arrives late to school because she “couldn’t force” herself to go straight to homeroom (1). Ms. Porter greets her. Maisie starts the writing prompt, describing the ballet studio as her sanctuary (2). After time is up, Ms. Porter tells her students to enjoy their midwinter break. When the bell rings, Ms. Porter checks in with Maisie. She wants to make sure her knee is okay. Maisie lies, saying it feels fine. However, Ms. Porter cannot excuse her lateness and suggests Maisie see a counselor if she is struggling.

In Chapter 2, “Carry the X,” Maisie feels tired by the end of the day. On the bus, she reviews her math test. She is ashamed of her grade. She checks her phone, discovering messages from her friend Eva and “from Mom” (9). Eva’s message is about upcoming dance auditions. Maisie feels upset...
