Chapter 44

From all around Teresa emerge another twenty girls, all carrying weapons of some kind. Teresa asks Thomas if his name is Thomas, and Thomas says his name his Thomas. Teresa tells him he is coming with her and her group. Thomas consents to going, and Teresa hits him with a spear, knocking him down. Some of the other girls put Thomas in a bag. Thomas sees sympathy in Teresa’s eyes and hears sympathy in her voice, but not in her words, which tell him that will be killed.

Thomas tries to talk to Teresa, but a fist hits him in the stomach with the threat that if he speaks again, his friends will die. As they head away, Teresa tells Thomas in a whisper that their telepathic communication is being blocked. They head out across the desert and then into...
