Summary
In Part II, Tom drove to the house of his old college friend Sam Tierney, a college professor, where he planned to spend the night in Pittsburgh. Sam initially seemed surprised to see him but then remembered the planned visit. In the narration, Tom reminisced about his time living with Sam during grad school, which coincided with when he first started dating Amy. He recalled his plan back then to write a book about pickup basketball, travelling around America writing about the people he met on basketball courts. Sam had encouraged the idea at the time and reminded Tom about it in the present. A much younger grad student arrived at the house and it became apparent to Tom that she was in a relationship with Sam. Later, Tom asked Sam if his department were aware of the relationship and he said now...
