Summary
Abel wakes up, and the attendants lead him into another room where he dons the helmet. Then he “[falls] back and into darkness” where he sees a series of images (126). The images portray the accused person's life. Abel is unsure what “he is thinking” (128). Some of the images feel like memories from childhood and afterward. He sees the accused with someone he loves but she does not love him back. The accused cannot reconcile who he is if he is “not the things that were done to [him]” (133). Then the imagery changes to flat images of a room. Abel wakes in the chair covered in drool before falling unconscious again. When he wakes back up, an attendant calls Alina, the psychologist. As Alina explains what is happening, Abel feels like “a person remembering” (138). She explains that the images he saw were archetypal. Now...
