Pass Christian, Mississippi

Pass Christian is the town in Mississippi where the majority of the novel takes place. Bobby Western's life is primarily based in this location, although he leaves frequently. At the novel's start, he resides in an apartment by himself in Pass Christian. After his apartment is ransacked by unknown individuals, Bobby leaves the building and starts renting a room at the Seven Seas motel and bar.

Throughout the novel, Bobby comes and goes from his life in Pass Christian. He leaves to visit his grandmother in Tennessee, to see Alicia's friends at Stella Maris, to take a job in Florida, or to drive around the surrounding region. His inability to remain located in this setting is a manifestation of Bobby's unresolved psychological turmoil. Whenever he is in Pass Christian, the narrator depicts Bobby spending time at local bars with his friends.
