The machine

The machine is a symbol for the mysteries of the world and a certain cosmic power. In the beginning of the novel, Martin has no idea what the purpose of the machine is, as his father keeps it close to his chest and refuses to elaborate much on it. However, Martin eventually comes to find out that this machine is the key to bringing everyone back after they disappear.
