Summary

Chapter 30 begins with Martin taking refuge in the town hospital. Darla periodically leaves him books and notes; she seems to be the only person who knows where he is. He is entirely alone in the hospital but still wonders if he can hear footsteps sometimes. One morning, when Darla forgets to bring him books, he ventures into the rest of the hospital for the first time to find more. In one room, he finds a journal titled “The Life and Times of Kelvin Rice Volume II” behind a painting of the Jolly Roger (214).

Martin cracks open the journal in chapter 31. Kelvin’s ravings are hard to follow, and Martin worries that he may not like what he finds in the journal, but he presses onward. It details Kelvin meeting Nigel, establishing Xibalba, and the rest of the kids funneling in. Eventually, it comes...
