Tabor
Tabor is the primary backdrop for the novel. This is the small town in the Red River Valley where the narrative is set and where all of the primary characters live. Tabor is a farming community that primarily thrives on sugar beet production. Many of the characters are either beet farmers or work for the local sugar processing plant. The Red River is also a defining geographical feature of the town.
The narrative is peppered with scenic descriptions of Tabor. Such passages include detailed renderings of the trees, birds, soil, hills, and pastures. The majority of the characters have a complicated relationship with the region and are attached to the land because of their ancestors' histories there.
