The Regency Grand is the hotel where Molly, the protagonist, works as a maid. Throughout the novel the hotel employees and guests form relationships through their interactions at The Regency Grand. The hotel facilitates Molly’s identity as a maid and her vicarious involvement in Mr. Black’s death.

Molly's apartment is the setting of her private life. Before the narrative present, she shared the space with her grandmother and their relationship informed her sense of home and family. After Gran's death, Molly feels isolated and alone. The absence of family and human connection in Molly's life is personified in the silence of the apartment. When other characters visit Molly's home throughout the novel, it symbolizes the entry of friendship and community into her life.
