Summary

Chapter 3 begins with Conn waking up on his “second day as Nevery’s apprentice” (34). He goes downstairs to see Nevery and Benet packing. Nevery orders more tea, tells Benet to go upstairs and pack, and orders food for Conn. He tells Conn that they are going to Heartsease, his old mansion, which has been abandoned for 20 years due to his exile. He explains the magic “crisis” to Conn (36). While Nevery talks, Conn explains Wellmet’s balance of power to the reader: Sunrise is the wealthy area of town, ruled by the Duchess. Twilight is the more decrepit side of town, ruled by Crowe. In the middle of city, a chain of islands is ruled by the wizards.
