The Living Beach

The living beach is a symbol of life itself. Throughout her time at Vega Baja, Sirena avoids this beach, fearing that the unpredictable waters might drown her. Her resistance to swimming in this water illustrates Sirena's fear of life in the wake of her mother, father, and brother's death.

The Death Beach

The death beach symbolizes fear. Sirena says that she avoids the living beach and only plays on the death beach because she cannot swim. However, she also keeps to this beach because it feels safe as the water is still and surrounded by rocks. The death beach is therefore a symbolic representation of Sirena's unresolved anxieties and trepidations.
