Vega Baja

Vega Baja is the region in Puerto Rico where Sirena lives in the years following her family's death. After losing her mother, father, and brother, Sirena moves to an orphanage in Vega Baja. The establishment is run by a group of single, childless women. Children from all over the region arrive at and depart from the home constantly.

The home is located near the ocean. Every Sunday the children go swimming after Mass. The seas are divided into the living beach and the death beach. Sirena keeps to the still waters of the death beach because she cannot swim and is afraid.

It is also in Vega Baja that Sirena meets and falls in love with Martin. They spend roughly a year together here. They leave for San Juan when Martin's mother gets out of the hospital.
