Summary

Sirena waited on the rocks for hours. When the "the sun started to rise," she saw Martin "walking along the beach" (176). Suddenly she noticed how small he was. He looked ill and childlike. He did not "resemble a grown-up at all" (176). Sirena would later discover that "Martin was sick" (176). She would continue loving him anyway. Before she had her child, he was the only person she had. Even when Martin's sickness worsened, Sirena would continue loving him. He would give her the love she needed, and eventually her child.

Martin stood on the shore until Sirena climbed down. He had packed their things. He asked Sirena to come to San Juan with him.

Martin and Sirena left the home for San Juan. Instead of being lovers, they were "brother and sister now" (176). He slept on the couch, sometimes with his mother, and Sirena...
