Laura

At the beginning of the novel, the protagonist Laura is a 40-something divorcee working as the assistant for an elderly man named Anthony. The two become friends over the six years Laura has worked for him and they are at a point in their friendship that they can sense each other’s needs. Laura is aware that Anthony is letting go, and she is not surprised when she finds him dead in the garden early in the novel. She is surprised, however, to learn that Anthony has left his house and possessions to her.

Laura is overwhelmed when she realizes the scope of the number of lost items that she must return to the owners as per Anthony’s wishes. She wants to do right by Anthony and turns to Freddy and Sunshine to help in seeing the task through. As such, Laura befriends Sunshine and eventually begins...
