Summary

In Chapter 39, the bedroom door remains locked and Laura complains about the song. Freddy tends the rose garden and says he has not heard the song in days. Laura explains that she has tried to play the song, but Therese will not allow it to be played. Laura worries that no one will claim any of the lost items. Sunshine sulks because she does not think anyone listens to her. Sunshine tells them that it is not the engagement ring that Therese wants, but Anthony’s letter.

Chapter 40 returns to Eunice in 2005. Eunice and Bomber discuss Portia’s recent publication, an erotica book. Eunice is exasperated that critics call the book “’a razor-sharp deconstruction of the sexual balance of power in modern relationships” (225).
