This is the play's broad-strokes setting, although it is important to note that the physical and/or geographical elements of the U.S. are less important to the narrative than its socio-cultural-political elements. More specifically, the country's history of tension between liberalism and conservativism, particularly when it comes to experiences of queer history and of HIV-AIDS, are important components of developments in the play's plot and themes.

Both the city and the State of New York are important geo-physical settings for the play. Much of the action takes place in New York City, with its emphasis on business and busy-ness and image.
