The Inheritance (Matthew Lopez) Overview

The Inheritance, by Matthew Lopez, is the story of several young gay men struggling to define their lives and identities in the early 2000’s. Drawing heavily on the novel Howards End by British novelist E.M. Forster for elements of character, plot, and relationship, the narrative focuses on well-meaning Eric, self-destructive Toby, deeply wounded Leo, and closed-off Henry as they search for who they are to themselves, to each other, and as gay men. The play’s themes, also drawing upon Howards End, include considerations of the search for individuality and identity, and the power of love and compassion.
