Summary

In Chapter 22, Octavia, Elf, and Elf’s colleague—known as Mr Brown— take the train to Deal to find Angie and Cutter. Elf touches on Cutter’s “unorthodox” policing methods (214). Suddenly, a clergyman opens the door to their compartment. When Brown tells the clergyman the compartment is occupied, the clergyman apologizes and leaves. He leaves a medicine bottle behind. Elf asks Brown to return it to the clergyman. Elf remarks to Octavia that it will take a couple days until the man who died at Strythe House is identified. The train suddenly stops, and people shout in the passageway. Octavia emerges and asks a guard what happened. He explains that a man stuck his head out a window for a breath of fresh air just as another train was racing past. The train decapitated him. It was Brown.
