Summary

In Chapter 17, Octavia attends a séance at Mrs Digby’s home upon Mr Healy’s request. Mr Healy wants her to write a sensational article. The medium, Miss Bewell, summons the ghost of Alice. Alice is a child who claims the darkness stole her brightness from her.

During the séance, Elf tells Octavia he used his police connections to look into the Spiriters. The girls who go missing are all found with traces of some mysterious residue and scraps of cloth.

Octavia is shocked when Angie Tatton speaks through Miss Bewell. Angie says, “They can’t touch me no more, but I can touch them! You tell them, you tell them! I’ll show them brightness!” (175).

Gideon, Cutter, and Angie take the train to Deal in Chapter 18. Angie is mostly quiet but occasionally bursts into song. Cutter gets them a carriage...
