Cylinders
In "The History of Sound" and "Origin Stories," the phonograph cylinders are symbols of the past. In "The History of Sound," when the cylinders arrive on Lionel's doorstep, he is overcome by memories of his youthful love affair with David. The cylinders transport him in time and compel him to meditate on his personal history. In "Origin Stories," discovering the cylinders in her attic leads Annie on a self-discovery quest. These mementos from the past make her reflect on her own past experiences.
Painting
In "Edwin Chase of Nantucket" and "The Silver Clip," the songbird painting is symbolic of artistic expression. In the former story, the painting is Will's way of telling Laurel how he feels about her and what he hopes for her life. In the latter story, the painting grants the narrator clarity on his own artistic pursuits, and guides his creative process.
