Summary

In “August in the Forest,” August is living in Wells Slope, New Hampshire for a writing residency. At a local bakery one day, he runs into Chloe, the doctor he saw at the ER for food poisoning. He asks her for a date. After going on a hike, they start dating and having sex for the following month. Then, Chloe breaks up with him because she is too busy with work. Despondent, August calls his best friend Elizabeth, who lives in Laos. She reveals that she is coming home to see her boyfriend Emerson next week and would like to visit August, too.

On the day of Elizabeth’s arrival, August runs into Chloe in town. She is upset from an incident at work and asks to hang out. He agrees, and Chloe joins him...
