Dom

Throughout the novel, Dom's character is a symbol of the past. Dom is indeed one of the primary reasons Alex has endeavored to escape her life in the city and hide on Long Island with Simon. Dom's looming presence throughout the narrative parallels the dread Alex feels in association with her former life and identity. Although she is physically separated from Dom, and these other facets of her old life, they continue to haunt her.

Long Island is a symbol of escape. Alex is glad for Simon's invitation to spend the remainder of the summer in this location with him, as it offers her a retreat from her life in the city.
