Summary

In Chapter 7, at Margaret’s house, Alex and Margaret were greeted by Karen, the house manager. Margaret led Alex to her room, where Alex plugged in her phone. Karen told them she was taking the other children “to the tennis club” (164). Afterwards, Alex suggested they drink some wine, which they fetched from the stocked fridge. On their way back upstairs, Alex noticed Karen’s sterile room. While drinking, Margaret made underhanded remarks about Karen.

Alex used Margaret’s phone to text Jack. She needed somewhere to stay that night. Margaret’s manner reminded Alex of “girls from [her] first restaurant job” (167).
