Summary

The next section is titled “Journal of Rose Ingrid Castle.” Billy came to the girls' tent every night. The three talked about everyday things and Rose was happy, even though she was certain Nina was compiling “a list of grievances that she would use against us when we got home” (196). Billy chose different card games but Fern always won. Rose began to “have feelings” for Billy and felt he returned them. One day, Nina berated Rose, saying she looks foolish. Rose remained at camp while Billy and Fern swam one day, but realized Nina had manipulated her into that. Later, Rose, Daniel, and Nina watched as Billy and Fern each tried their breath longest. Fern always won. Nina told Daniel she believed Billy and Fern had a crush on each other and said it was cute. She then smiled directly at Rose.
