Summary

Part I is titled "Semana Santa," which refers to the seven days leading up to Easter. In the opening scene, Amadeo Padilla is preparing to play the role of Jesus in the annual procession of the hermandad. Amadeo builds the cross himself, and he chooses “heavy rough oak” instead of the lighter pine. All of the hermanos (members of the hermandad) are preparing. The groups leader is Tio Tive, who is Amadeo's great-uncle. Amadeo still lives with his mother Yolanda (Tio Tive's niece), and everyone knows Amadeo is lazy. He has lived in Las Penas his entire life. On this day when he is part of the hermanos preparing for the procession, he sees everything with a new focus. When he arrives home, his 15-year-old daughter Angel is waiting. She is eight months pregnant. Amadeo has not seen her in a year, but...
