Point of View

The novel is narrated in the first-person present point of view by three narrators: Alex, Jack, and Claire. The three narrators are all teenagers in their senior year of high school. At first, the three teens are not close friends. Instead, they are acquaintances who have lived in the same small town in Ohio with one another for their whole lives. However, as the novel progresses, the three narrators become good friends who change the course of one another’s lives.

Each narrator offers a different perspective for the story to explore. Alex narrates the first chapter, but she has less chapters total than the other two narrators at just 19. Her chapters are also usually the shortest of any other chapters, and her language tends to be more elevated and poetic than the other two, who are usually more plot-driven in their chapter.
