Summary

The novel is divided into short chapters that are narrated in present-tense by Alex, Jack, and Claire. In Chapter One, Alex explains how she killed the man she believed was responsible for killing her sister. She jogs by his house all summer long until one day she stops in front of his porch and says she is winded, then asks to come inside. After he locks the door, she tells him who she is and then tortures and kills him. She feels no remorse.

In Chapter Two, Jack remembers how in freshman year he and his friends had joined the search party to look for Alex’s sister, Anna Craft, for fun. They had stopped in the woods to smoke weed and eat Doritos. He started hooking up with Branley, but then the search party found Anna’s hand buried a few yards...
