Aaron Falk

Aaron Falk is the protagonist of the novel. He is in his mid-thirties, and he works as a financial detective for the government in Melbourne, Australia. He is originally from the rural Australian town of Kiewarra, which is mainly a farming community. His mother died giving birth to him, and his father raised him. As a boy, he was good friends with Luke Hadler and Ellie Deacon. After Ellie Deacon was found dead in a river at the age of sixteen, the citizens of Kiewarra falsely suspected Falk of killing her because of a note in her room with the word “Falk” written on it. At the beginning of the novel, Falk returns to Kiewarra to attend Luke’s funeral. Luke appeared to have killed his wife, his son, and himself.
