The Lagoon

The primary setting of the novel is the lagoon that Kerans, Beatrice, and Bodkin call home after being abandoned there by Riggs' men. The lagoon is really three connected lagoons, and it is inhabited by large amphibians and reptiles, many of which actively threaten the novel's three protagonists. It also rests above a former city, and the three researchers have access to the upper floors of some of the larger buildings. The lagoon rests at the intersection between the human world and the animal one; it is on the brink of being overtaken by the jungle. Its remoteness allows the three researchers to conduct their examination of the flora and fauna around them with extreme attention and focus.
