Summary

At the beginning of Chapter Four, “The Causeways of the Sun,” Lieutenant Hardman disappears. Kerans spends the morning on his balcony. He dons clothing meant to placate Riggs and convince him that Kerans intends to leave with the rest of the men. Kerans moves through the day as he normally would, making no preparations for staying with Beatrice beyond the departure of Riggs and his men, but he realizes quickly that he intends to. Kerans sets out across the three lagoons and watches Macready and his men bring the testing station back toward the base. Kerans goes to visit Beatrice, who is lethargic when he arrives because the thermostat has broken and the temperature in her quarters has risen to the nineties. Beatrice tells Kerans she has been sleeping poorly and sends him away. He begins attempting to fix her generator.
