Point of View

The novel is told primarily, but not exclusively, from Kofi’s first person point of view. Kofi can generally be seen as a reliable narrator as he only expresses his own emotions and describes only experiences he was personally a part of. One exception to this is in regards to his relationship with Ama and his discussions about Ama. Those around Kofi seem to understand that Kofi is in love with her. Kofi understands that he has feelings for her, but he does not fully know how to express these feelings even within his own thoughts. He does not believe that his desire to race his cousin has anything to do with Ama, but his Kwasi tells Kofi that such things are always about a girl.

Because the story is told from Kofi’s point of view, the reader has many of the same unanswered...
