Offin River

The Offin River has always provided the Asante people with gold. It flows into the Pra River which then flows into the Big Sea at the Coast. Kofi is associated with this river as he was born right by the river and floated on it after birth. The tension at the beginning of the novel is largely centered around the Offin as Kofi and his cousin, Kofi Katari, plan to have a race in the water. There is always a fear of the water as the children know that danger lurks there at night. This danger is the foreign traders who could capture them.
