Chapter 14 Summary

Cardinal Bem makes his way to the church where he is to meet Father Ley, but he is hesitant to go in. In the square, young boys are passing out leaflets about the speech that is to be given at the Rywald celebrations, and are arrested by the Security Police. A young man approaches the cardinal with an envelope containing money along with a letter from Father Ley, who has sent the young man to intercept Bem and bring him to the hospital where he can meet Father Ley in secret. Cardinal Bem does not trust the young man even though he tests him, but he goes with him anyway as there is nothing else to do.

Chapter 14 Analysis

Cardinal Bem continues to spiral into despair, not being able to trust anyone. He wonders how far the conspiracy has gone and blames himself...
