Chapter 3 Summary

The Security Police arrive at the residence and insist on taking Cardinal Bem away against his objections. They refuse to let him call the Minister for Religious Affairs to confirm the orders, and ask him to pack a small bag and come right away. They insist that he is not being arrested but is instead being taken into protective custody, and that it is for his own safety and no one must know that he has left the residence. They take him out the back of the residence and drive him away in a red Volvo.
