Chapter 4 Summary

On Tuesday morning, Qwill is wakened at 6:30 a.m. by the sounds of an electric saw and a hammer and when he goes outside, Clem Cottle introduces himself. While Qwill feeds the cats breakfast, Mildred calls to report the death of Captain Phlogg. Qwill is pleased with Clem's work on his stone steps because the bill is reasonable and Clem is honest, skilled and industrious, so he discusses the possibility of Clem building his addition, and Clem agrees. Because he is in such a pleasant mood, Qwill agrees to judge the Fourth of July parade in Mooseville which Mildred is also judging. During lunch at the Northern Lights Hotel, Qwill sees an engagement announcement about Clem and Maryellen Wimsey as well as a notice about the Wimsey family reunion and he considers writing a column about family reunions.
