Chapter 21 Summary

Barney says they will wait in the car until someone comes by to give them gas. He tells Valancy they'll talk if they have something worthwhile to say. Valancy says that John Foster says that if two people can sit in silence for 30 minutes without talking then they can be friends, and only if they can be friends can they be something more. Barney Snaith agrees that John Foster says good things sometimes. Suddenly, Valancy realizes that she is in love with Barney Snaith, but that she must keep it to herself because he hasn't done anything that suggests he feels the same way about her. Valancy also realizes that it is just enough for her to enjoy the feeling of love without actually having to act on it. Barney shares a dream with Valancy about his desire for ballooning.
