The Statues

The statues are symbols of the witches' enchantment on the Beast and his castle. In the opening scene, the Beast believes the statues were not part of the grounds before the enchantment. It becomes clear later that these are servants who have been changed because of the curse. The Beast sees them as terrifying.

Clothing

The Beast continues to wear clothing which serves as a symbol of his humanity. By the time the opening scene takes place, there is virtually no evidence of the Prince other than his eyes and the clothes.

The Portraits

The portraits of the Prince, done shortly before he becomes the Beast and during the transformation, are symbols of the physical changes taking place. The Prince realizes the changes are happening only after comparing himself to the original portrait, painted just a few months earlier.
