Will and Lyra wake. The Chevalier Tialys is watching them and updates them on the news: the Consistorial Court has retreated and Mrs. Coulter has been taken prisoner by King Ongunwe. Tialys explains that he knows this because he used the lodestone resonator. The spies and the children share food, and the spies are astonished at the window which they have a little time to examine. They cross back through and Will closes the window. Lyra confirms that Ama is safe as they walk through the devastation. Lyra watches Tialys use the lodestone resonator and he explains how it works.
