Chapter Three, Scavengers Summary

Serafina Pekkala looks for Iorek Byrnison, the bear king, in his kingdom. She finds him in the middle of a hunt for food, which has gotten harder for the bears because the world has grown warmer and the ice and snow are melting. Serafina explains to Iorek that Lee Scoresby is dead—she was too late to save him from an army of attacking Muscovites, and that he died not knowing exactly what he was doing or why. Serafina tells Iorek how to reach Lee's body and explains that she has preserved it. Iorek says that he and his people must leave and he has chartered a ship for the journey. The scavenger foxes that wait to eat the remains of his kill are listening.
