Castle Cove High School

Castle Cove High School is the only high school in the small, seaside village of Castle Cove in California. Alice and Iris are juniors at the school when the novel begins. They have been in school together since they were in kindergarten, but they never speak to one another before Iris becomes Alice's tutor. The school is made of two cliques, the Zoners and the Mains. Since Alice is a wealthy and popular Main, she never pays attention to any of the impoverished Zoners. However, as the investigation goes on, Alice learns to appreciate the Zoners, and they, in turn, learn to appreciate Alice.
