Chapters 5 through 11 Summary

In Chapter Five, Ash arrives in Edinburgh and makes the drive to Donnelaith. A short distance before the town he gets out of the car to walk, instructing his assistant and other employees to go on to the inn. In the woods, he hears the beating of drums and remains well clear of the sound. He knows the Little People are near but that they don't know he is near. He remembers another time and can imagine that he hears a woman's screams. He encounters the Little People - Samuel's people - and can smell the odor of human fat burning on their fires. He discovers that there are few women remaining in the tribe. He rushes to the inn and orders an immediate return to London. There he asks Samuel why he hadn't mentioned that the women were all gone...
