Chapter 20 Summary

Willie works as a porter in Farm Colony, which is a hospital for women, under the assumed name of Joseph. Willie listens to their stories. He also takes pride in his work, throwing himself into learning how to best wax the floor and undertake all of the duties he's assigned. By 1948, he and one of the fellow escapees, Freddie, are still free. The two other escapees have been recaptured. Joseph becomes close with Claire Adams, one of the patients. When she dies, Willie goes to dig up one of the jars of money he buried when he was robbing banks. He donates it anonymously so Mrs. Adams can be properly buried.
